Farmers Market VS Supermarket- How switching to Farmers Markets helped me lose weight.

So we all know the basics of weight loss and optimal heath right?

Eat a variety of fresh fruit and veg, free range meat and eggs, nuts, seeds and whole grains, plus the main factor of Calories In vs Calories Out. 

This sounds very simple, yes? 

Then why are we as a nation (New Zealand and Australia) a couple of the most over weight countries in the world?

Well there are many factors, but one place I would like to point my finger at are the supermarkets. 

Supermarkets AKA “Greed Markets” are sneaky with their marketing, making us buy more then we need, filling our trollies with processed foods and making ‘real food’ like fruit and veggies more expensive then potato chips and lollies!  

The result of this, not enough nutrients and over eating on high calorie foods = Weight Gain. 

We obviously have to eat and get our food from somewhere, so why not get it from somewhere that will help our bodies look and feel great! 

When I boycotted the Supermarkets and started getting my food from the Farmers Markets thats exactly what happened. 

Here are a few reasons why…..


Farmers markets will always have in season foods. Eating what is in season is not only great for keeping the price down but you will also get more bang for buck with your nutrients, as the fruit and veggies are picked when the plants are fully ripened. This means the plants have had more sun exposure which results in the fruit and veggies getting a higher level of antioxidants. 

This will help your body function to its full potential, giving you more energy to train hard, help with recovery and creating a better ability to burn fat. 


There are always high calorie foods jumping out at you ever isle you go down. We all know what it is like trying to get past the chocolate on sale, sometimes we win and sometimes we walk a way with a block… or 2.

The great thing about Farmers Markets is there are no temptations like that. There can be delicious homemade treats, but they are at a respectable price so you will not over indulge. 

Remember….if its in your house, its in your mouth! 


You get what you need, Veggies, Fruit, Nuts, Seeds, Whole Grains, Free Range Eggs and Meat. You will find you will save money buying only what you need each week. Yes free range meat cost more, but never put a price on your health, plus you will be saving from not buying unnecessary things. When you start shopping like this you are decreasing your changes of over eating. 

No over eating = No weight gain! 


Because the food changes with every season you have no choice but to go with the flow of what is fresh on the day. The owner will always give you tips on how to cook things that you have never cooked before. No more boring frozen mixed veg! Your mind and taste buds will be open to a whole new delicious world. 

So, my challenge to you is to google Farmers Markets near you and for the next month do all of your shopping there. See what you learn and see if you body changes like mine did.
